Allusions to Conan Doyle storiesEdit

The pilot episode makes many references to the original Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. These allusions include:

  • Sherlock Holmes' use of three nicotine patches and the title of the case as a "three patch problem" refers to the original Holmes' "three pipe problem" from The Adventure of the Red Headed League.
  • At the end of the episode, John Watson shot Jeff Hope from the building opposite 221B Baker Street. This alludes to the planned assassination of Holmes by Colonel Moran in the Conan Doyle story The Adventure of the Empty House.
  • The deductions that Sherlock made on John's phone bore many similarities to the deductions made by the original Holmes on a pocket watch in the story The Sign of Four.
  • The cab driver Jeff Hope was based on the character Jefferson Hope in A Study in Scarlet.
  • Two texts that Sherlock sent to John, reading "Come at once if convenient" and "If inconvenient, come anyway" refer to a telegram that the original Holmes sent to Watson in The Adventure of the Creeping Man.
