Allusions to Conan Doyle stories Edit

The title of the episode is drawn from the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual, where Holmes mentioned a troubling case involving "Ricoletti of the club foot and his abominable wife". This is also the inspiration for the characters of Emilia Ricoletti and her husband.

The five orange pips that Sir Eustace Carmichael receives as a threat are a reference to the same threat in the Conan Doyle story The Five Orange Pips.

PC Rance is a reference to the character Constable John Rance from the Conan Doyle story A Study in Scarlet.
