The Second Afghan War was a conflict in Afghanistan. The army doctor John Watson served in the war but was sent home after suffering a bullet wound to the shoulder.

In the modern-day retelling of Sherlock, John Watson also serves in Afghanistan and is sent home after being shot in the shoulder.

Allusions to Conan Doyle stories Edit

In the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story A Study in Scarlet, the original Watson served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War and was sent home after suffering a bullet wound. In this story he recounts how he was shot in the shoulder, though in The Sign of Four he says that his leg was shot.
