Charles Augustus Magnussen owned a large and powerful newspaper company. Charles used his power and wealth to gain information, in turn making him more powerful. He used the information he acquired to blackmail people; he was referred to by Sherlock Holmes as the "Napoleon of blackmail".
Charles had John Watson kidnapped and put into a bonfire at St James' Church. He did so to test if John was a pressure point for the consulting detective Sherlock Holmes. Although Charles later claimed that he had people standing by, they were unnecessary, as Sherlock and Mary Watson rescued John from the fire. Charles filmed the rescue and watched the footage in his mind palace.
