Afghanistan

A part of John Watson's flashback to Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is a country where John Watson and Bill Murray were deployed. John served in the city Kandahar and the province Helmand. John was shot in the shoulder and was rescued by Bill, an army nurse.

After John's return to Britain, he frequently had dreams about his time in Afghanistan.

Alternate 19th century timeline Edit

This information is from the alternate 19th century timeline.

Afghanistan was the location for the Second Afghan War. Army doctor John Watson served with the British Army in Afghanistan, though was sent home after suffering a bullet wound to the shoulder.

AppearancesEdit

The only time Afghanistan is shown is at the very start of the Sherlock episode A Study in Pink.

Afghanistan is mentioned in the Sherlock episodes:

Afghanistan also appears within the alternate timeline of Sherlock in the episode The Abominable Bride.

Behind the scenesEdit

  • John Watson's adventure in Afghanistan are similar to Watson's tale in the original Conan Doyle stories. In these stories, Watson "was struck in the shoulder by a Jezail bullet" and "had it not been for the devotion and courage shown by Murray, my orderly," he would have been captured by the Ghazis.
  • Co-creator Mark Gatiss said that the Afghanistan wars from the Conan Doyle stories and from the series Sherlock are "the same war now, I thought. The same unwinnable war."[1]
